CRUE Support is for EU, EEA and Swiss citizens registering their residence at a Câmara Municipal in Portugal. You need a Portuguese NIF before you can register. If you do not have one yet, you can add it below.
Two steps to get started. First, payment. Second, a short form in your Novomove account where you tell us your situation. You do not need your documents ready to order. Once we know your circumstances we send you a checklist of exactly what your Câmara will want from you.
How CRUE Support works
The CRUE is the residence certificate your Câmara Municipal issues to EU, EEA and Swiss citizens. You are required to register after three months in Portugal, and the certificate is not issued before that point.
The Câmara assesses you under one of four categories: worker, self-employed, student, or sufficient resources. The documents differ between them, and arriving with the wrong set is the usual reason people leave without a certificate and have to go back. Working out which category you fall into, and what it requires, is the first thing we do for you.
- You complete a short intake form telling us your situation. No documents needed at this stage.
- We send you a checklist built around your category, and you upload those documents to your order.
- A partner lawyer reviews the file within 5 business days and writes back if anything needs correcting.
- You book your Câmara appointment. Most Câmaras are walk-in, though Lisbon and Porto usually want one booked in advance.
- In the week before your appointment you have a 45-minute call with the lawyer, to go through your file and what to expect on the day.
- You attend, and the Câmara issues the certificate to you.
We prepare the file and brief you. We do not book or attend the appointment, and the decision is the Câmara's.
Translations are not included. Any document not in Portuguese, English, Spanish or French needs translating before you upload it.
Registering with family? Each person registers separately and needs their own documents, so add them below and we will send a short form for each of them.
One thing for later. Once your CRUE has been issued and is at least six months old, you can move your NIF to your Portuguese address. That step is what registers you as a Portuguese tax resident, so most people want to know what it means for them before they do it rather than after. If that is you, add the 45-minute tax consultation below and talk it through with an accredited Portuguese accountant.
